Gunlord Soundtrack, Rafael Dyll, 2012
With its obvious Turrican inspirations, Gunlord always required a soundtrack that would reference Chris Hülsbeck’s legendary works. The increasingly melodic orientation of Rafael Dyll’s Söldner-X soundtracks, as well as their outstandingly well realised sci-fi sound, marked Dyll as just the right candidate for this job. And indeed, throughout Gunlord, Dyll delivers a beautifully crafted Turrican homage that never threatens to turn into mere pastiche, mixing in enough of Dyll’s trademark trance stylings. As expected for a game that takes inspiration from Chris Hülsbeck’s late 80s/early 90s oeuvre, Dyll’s synth pop melodies are punchy and memorable throughout, revealing Dyll as a master tune smith with keen pop instincts that ensure his compositions always captivate, even during quieter moments. And there’s a surprising number of powerfully atmospheric cues on the Gunlord soundtrack that eschew their high-powered album brethren’s anthemic nature. After all, the Turrican scores equally had their mind set on more than just racing platforming action, a sometimes forgotten aspect of these classics that Dyll references with skill and aplomb.
