C64 ORCHESTRA – RUN 10, Rob Hubbard / Jeroen Tel, 1985-1990
There’s no shortage of C64 game music albums out there, but their legal status is often a bit dubious. No such qualms about C64 ORCHESTRA – RUN 10, which compiles some of industry legends’ Rob Hubbard and Jeroen Tel’s best work for the system (and also presents them in rather thinly orchestrated versions on a second disc). There’s never any doubt that these pieces are classic compositions, packed to the brim with memorable, upbeat melodies and head-bopping rhythms. What makes this compilation such a standout are two factors: the album producers’ excellent choice of selections, covering coveted titles like International Karate as well as more obscure games like Masters of Magic, a delightfully quirky and creative take on old-school RPG music. Secondly, most tracks run from 5 to 10 minutes, and for good reason. Despite their age, these are amazingly ambitious, densely layered compositions that can sustain their running times with ease when as carefully arranged as on C64 ORCHESTRA – RUN 10.
