EverQuest II Soundtrack, Laura Karpman, 2004
If one was forced to choose the best released score for a Western RPG, the EverQuest II soundtrack would have to be it. Its most outstanding feature are jaw-droppingly refined and sublime orchestrations rivaled in their quality only by very, very few other Western game scores such as Outcast. Of course, this benefits the many moments of high fantasy bombast and grandeur that EverQuest II expresses with greater sweep and effect than nearly any other Western RPG. But this score not only shines in how it executes musical fantasy genre conventions to absolute perfection. Instead, Laura Karpman goes one step further and uses her outstanding command of orchestral colours to break down genre boundaries and expectations. She’s daring enough to write eerie, head-spinning sound collages, creating adventurous, truly magical textures inspired by 20th century classical music that give EverQuest II a beguiling, unique sound. As monumental as it is innovative, EverQuest II creates a vast musical universe and is a watershed moment in orchestral Western game music.
