Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams Soundtrack, Chris Hülsbeck / Fabian Del Priore / Jan Zottmann, 2012
There’s really only one reason why anybody still remembers 1987’s Great Giana Sisters: Chris Hülsbeck’s impossibly catchy, cheery main tune. Getting Hülsbeck for the 2012 remake Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams was as much a coup as it was a necessity, and Hülsbeck – working with long time collaborator Fabian Del Priore – responds by writing a light-hearted soundtrack that returns him to his melodic heyday of the late 80s and early 90s. Subtly recalling the 1980s without going all retro, the Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams soundtrack is both inspired homage to and an update of the original game’s music style, bringing together light fantasy synth orchestrations and contemporary beats and rhythms – always guided by memorable, optimistic melodies. To mirror the game’s dual worlds, the developers then came up with the inspired idea to let chiptune metal combo Machinae Supremacy write hard-rocking cover versions of Hülsbeck’s tracks. Working with stronger material than on Jets’n’Guns, Machinae Supremacy whip up a frenzy of chugging metal rhythms and gloriously over the top guitar soli to top off one of the best platforming scores in recent years.
