Bastion Soundtrack, Darren Korb, 2011
Like Journey and a few select others, the Bastion soundtrack is one of those happy success stories of an indie game score becoming a bestseller, propelling his creator to new heights of prominence. Fortunately, all that attention and praise showered upon Bastion is absolutely warranted. There’s an interesting parallel between Bastion and a soundtrack like Infamous 2. Both works use as their foundation traditionally American music genres – in the case of Bastion it’s weary, hard-bitten blues and country folk – and then reinvent them by mixing in an astonishing cornucopia of other genres, to concoct a sound world unique among Western games. Darren Korb manages to add hard rock, electronic loops, cinematic underscoring with a fantasy touch, jazz, chiptune and Indian sitar sounds to the soundtrack’s earthy Wild West feel, and pulls off the improbable feat of making it all feel coherent, brimming with gritty energy. Constantly pushing forward into new territory, Bastion is a brilliant re-imagination of musical traditions.
